Coding for Kids
With technology constantly evolving, there is a growing need for us to learn how to interact with the digital world around us. Furthermore, an understanding of how our technology works can allow us to excel in this modern age. From the apps on your phone to the microwave in your kitchen, there is evidence of coding all around us. With this in mind, it is no wonder that the importance of learning coding (also known as programming) is at the front of many people’s minds. In a similar fashion to learning any other language, there is a great benefit to starting your kids off young. We’ve listed our top five reasons why your kids should be learning how to code.
Understanding coding allows your kids to better understand the world around them.
Technology makes up a huge part of our everyday lives, from our mobile phones, to the toys our children play with. In the same way our kids learn about biology and physics to help understand their surroundings, programming should also be taught to them.
This need has been addressed in the U.S with former president Barack Obama endorsing mandatory computer programming education for kids in schools. In the UK, I.T lessons have transitioned into computer science programs, though some teachers are struggling with the changes in the curriculum.
Coding helps develop other crucial skills
In the journey of becoming a capable programmer, your child will develop a wide variety of other skills which are transferable to the real world. Some great examples of this are critical thinking and problem-solving.
When looking at a project, children will learn how to break it down into smaller, more manageable parts. They will learn how to be creative with the code, and how to troubleshoot it when it isn’t working. In an age of fast-moving technology, these skills will be extremely beneficial to your kids.
Programmers are in high demand
It is estimated that in the next ten years, there will be around 1.4 million jobs in computer sciences. This provides plenty of opportunity for children who gain an interest in programming to turn their hobby into a successful and prosperous career.
Even industries which may seem unrelated to programming can actually benefit from it. Banking, journalism and medicine, are but a few of the sectors which are seeing an increasing demand for employees with an understanding of programming.
Coding allows kids to express themselves
There are many ways in which children can utilise their knowledge of coding to express themselves. Whether they want to make an animation, a website or a video game, it is all possible for them to learn. These forms of expression are well suited to kids who may not be interested in drawing or singing for example.
Coding can be made simple
When first looking at code, it can seem pretty daunting. Once it is broken down however, it starts to become simpler. There are a number of resources online to help your children learn to code, or alternatively, there are a number of physical books which can also help.
